Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois | I recall buying B batteries for an old fashoned large radio my Grandfather gave me, I believe. It was a rather large battery in a square shape. Like you, don't believe I have seen an A battery.
Edit: After posting the above, I started thinking about battery sizes also. I did the wikipedia thing, there is a picture of an A battery and a B battery. The B battery is round, not at all like I thought I remembered buying as a kid for my Grandfathers old battery radio. One of the two said it was used in Russia, and it gave the sizes of both the A and the B. In the picture, it looked just like a AA battery.
I am sure I did buy a square battery for the old time radio, thought it was called a B battery. After it ran down, just like any red blooded american young boy, I tore the paper casing apart to see what was inside. There were several cells joined together comprising a square shape with heavy cardboard around it. If that was not a B battery, now I;m going to wonder for some time what the designation was.
