East Central Kansas | Here in Kansas, we planted winter wheat for a neighbor in January one year. We planted in the dry fluff above the frost layer. Planted 2 different varieties, one an early maturity for our area with good disease resistance, the other was a late maturity for our area with poor disease resistance. The early maturity variety yielded slightly below average for that year, the other was much below average. Note: both were planted at twice our normal seeding rate. Bottom line: vernalization did occur and grain was produced, however very little tillering occured.
