Yes, it needs some freezing to set seed. In my area, I have got it in as late as Christmas, and it still yields ok. My neighbor got some in the ground late February, and he had beautiful wheat grass hay, because there wasn't a head or seed in the field. I would think if you planted it already, at some point it will germinate early enough to come up and freeze back.
