Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Usually not. Generally short season corn will not handle as much heat since it has northern genetics in it. LG 2460 seems to be an exception. It's best to plant it early to try to get it ahead of the heat. We usually take some yield hit but we only use it if we are thinking about going back to wheat or want to take a certain field out early.
There is another train of thought that since short season corn matures faster it requires less water. That has merit. It can work under limited irrigation as the corn will not need to be irrigated as long through the season thus requiring less water. |
