As part of my degree program at Penn State, I took 2 courses in "general" chemistry, and 1 course in organic chemistry. In addition, I had a pretty good background in chemistry coming out of high school, so I tested out of the very basic chemistry class at Penn State.
I'd say this background was important, as many of the classes l took later at Penn State built upon this chemistry background.
