Subject: barn quilt painting

Central Illinois
My wife would like to paint some barn quilts to hang up outside. Ihave been asked and need some advice.

What should we use to paint on so we can hang it on the building, Some thing that will not deteriate in the weather?

What type of paint should be used for it?

Thanks.

I plan on using automotive paint (unless someone has a convincing reason not to) on MDO plywood when I paint mine this winter.

where do you get a variety of automotive paints in small quantities? MDO plywood I assume is treated plywood.

MDO are the initials for Medium Density Overlay , outdoor plywood covered with a paintable paper surface, it is also called sign board because of its use in billboards and other outdoor signs. Surface is very uniform to apply paint to. I plan to investigate the small spray bottles of touch up paint, at least the design that I plan to paint has maple leaves in 3 or 4 related colors per leaf on a white (or light colored back ground) with a darker boarder and a division boundary dividing the entire piece into 4 smaller ones. If that doesn't look practicle, I'll just buy different colors of implement paint (even if I have to by AC Persian Orange). Just in orange paints there would be the AC Persian Orange, Case orange. After this is posted, I will look at Graingers selection of Rustoleum Implement paints and post what I find. Even if the colors are not what you normally need for touch up, you could always use them to paint and protecct new work until the final color goes on. Menards and others have the MDO plywood in 1/2 sheets, which is the size of barn quilt I intend to paint.

It appears that the only size of touch-up paint is a small (.5 oz.) with a white-out style brush, not my favorite way to cover anything. Rustoleum ag paints are available in 10 colors with several in each primary color. Krylon has 62 colors in their outdoor line of paints and has a nice array of colors. perhaps the best bet is standard exterior house paint in 1/2 pint color trial cans from the paint store or the big box lumber yards.

Does the board need to be primed before painting?
Do you tape off sections as you spray paint it?

I have a hard time so as to not get paint under the tape?

Any tricks to this?
