Subject: Hydraulic orbit motors?

Denhoff,ND right in the center of the State
What determines the speed and torque on a orbit motor, or is there no way to tell just by looking at them? I have a few laying around in the shop, some are shorter than others and some are bigger in diameter, I want to use one to build a hydraulic winch, would think you would want low speed and high torque or can you control the speed with adjustable flow control and use any speed motor? Thanks, Terry

I know that on our Header, the Reel Motor is a Hi-Torque one and the ports in-out are of a much larger capacity than the other 'common' ones around here..

** and we got it rebuilt a few years ago and it was definitely MORE Expensive to have that done as well!!

Other than that, I know that most common hyd motor manufacturers have decent Websites/ Info up on them, if you can see a Part Number to reference.. Good Luck!!

If they are like the charlynn type ....round body.... the longer barrel section is slower with more torque. Shorter barrel higher speed less power.

Bigger body around would be more power but take more oil flow.

Yes you can control the speed with a valve.

Hydraulic motors are usually sized by their displacement per rotation in cubic inches. Generally a larger displacement will give you a slower rotation and more torque with a given oil flow rate. Start with oil flow rate available from your pump and desired maximum rpm. Then select a motor displacement that will give you what you want. On some motors the gerotor section can be changed to give different displacements. If you have the part or model number of the motor you can probably find the motor specs on the web or at a hydraulic shop. There is some info in the Northertool and Surplus center catalogs too., http://www.surpluscenter.com/hydraulic.asp
