Looked at a 1988 936 versatile. 8800 hours on the tractor. In the last 1200 or so hours the engine has had an in frame overhaul, the tranny has been replaced, clutch has been replaced, all driveshaft U joints replaced, and the rear differential rebuilt. Last year they had to replace more gears and bearings in the transmission. Pivot pins are not perfect but ok. Planetaries were flipped at some point. Cab is immaculate, outside paint is faded, just what you'd expect. All of the work is documented- to the tune of $30,000+. It's a 2 owner tractor, the current owner has owned it since the mid 90's. Inside 20.8 - 42's are new, filled with fluid, duals are 30% and dry. Anyway, I just had a few questions-
Are the manual transmissions in these things weak? They were the same tranny as many of the older high horse versatiles: 875, 895...etc., but this one has had 2 major overhauls in a pretty short time. Just a fluke? maybe I would never have to touch it again? cab mounts jacking it around?
What should it cost from a private seller?

Lone Wolf, Ok
Transmissions were solid -- so long as the case is not made by Monarch (marked with an 'M' vs a 'V' for Versatile --

30K is about right - Hydraulics are not 'mega-flow' - but solid --
Sounds like a decent tractor - (I just put Outback autosteer on an 800 versatile with 12,000 hrs) --

Krist, transmissions give very little trouble if not abused, were all transmission mounts changed? you make a good point on cab mnts, personally I would change them out. Sounds like mechanic missed something in transmission, or was shimmed wrong, look a draw bar oin hole is it worn and egg shaped, then shes been pulled hard, price wise would guess mid thirthys, with the work thats been done. Would recommend, if seller is willing have a dealer, or if you have access to a flowrater, flowrate all remotes, with that many hrs bet there will be atleast one remote not up to snuff, email in profile shoot me a email with contact # been around alot of these girls, Scott. http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/001/3/5/1355-versatile-936...

transmissions are not built strong enough if you are going to USE the power,,,,,,,,,,,have seen them need to be overhouled in very low hour tractors

Probably depend but I would guess in the 25-35K range. 4 new outside tires will set you back a few pennies and you might as well spend them now or the insieds(especially the fronts) will wear much faster with poor condition duals. The manual trannys were very good, powersifts were good for the day but not as good as todays. Faded paint can be hard to fix. I saw a cherry 946(blue) with 3500 hours bring just north of 50K 2 falls ago and it had nearly new rubber all the way around so I can't imagine the tractor you describe is worth much over 30-35K at best.

Lone Wolf, Ok
Sorry I did not get back sooner -- the 'M' for Monarch would be huge on the Rear of the Transmission as viewed from the pivot joint.

Good luck with the tractor -- (Even if its a Monarch) Should hold up for many many hours!
