Good questions!
We have only a 100 bu pit below our scale. A high water table is a problem (!) in our building area & grain dealer felt it would've been hard to hold a bigger pit in the ground, especially in the early spring. 1000 bu would've been neat, but this one works OK.
I think you're visualizing the park, weigh, & dump concept pretty well. We pull on the scale until alignment light activates (which you can see in bottom photo), always weigh w/the driver off, & dump the front hopper without moving the truck after weighing loaded. After the front hopper is empty, then pull ahead using alignment light again & dump rear hopper. Then, don't move truck, but weigh empty. That's it, done. So, the truck is really only moved once after it's weighed in loaded.
Someone was suggesting something should've been located differently due to winds? I really have never seen the wind act consistently. The way it blows & swirls around the building site, you'd have to locate yourself about a 1/2 mis away to stay clear of dust totally. That's just part of the day. However, we do use all remote controls for the traps (& tarps) so we stay inside the dumphouse to unload, out of the elements. The "red" box you see on the gabel end of the dumphouse is a digital readout of the scale.
