Diverticulitis is a condition of aging as was previously stated. the colon after about 40 years begins to age and after grinding food and withstanding gas , it will begin to get micro hernias. Sort of like a run in a hose. It will enlarge in time and create a pouch which we call a diverticulum It is true that food and seed get in there and is not dislodged. It can even get infected. In my opinion the very best treatment is metamucil and not just a little bit. What you want to do with it is to actually keep the little pouches full of fiber and the good things of life , such as tomatoes can be eaten. I rarely had any pts have a problem when they adopted this method of treatment.
