Every person designing computer software or hardware wants to create the new standard, rather than follow the old standards. So any file made by any piece of software is likely to be readable by only the one version of software that created it.
There are a very few standards that do hold up to the test of time, and will be viewable on many different pieces of hardware with different versions of software.
Those are jpg picture files - most any still picture you see on the internet is a jpg type of file.
PDF is a type of file that has complicated text and picture layouts, but the company that owns the copyright to the PDF software has been pretty good at keeping different software compatable so most of us can view the file on different hardware and software.
TXT goes back several decades and is just the very, very basic numbers and letters on a keyboard with no pics, nothing fancy, no special formatting - as basic as it gets.
Those are the 3 basic ways to post a picture, a document, or a text document to the internet so the most people can view it.
Probably still gobldy-gook, but I'm just a simple dirt farmer, not a good teacher.... ;)
