Subject: Re: Baling Cereal Rye for Feed - Delayed Planting??

South East South Dakota/winters Tucson, AZ
I do the same thing plant rye in the fall and I bale it off for feed for the sheep and cows. Next year (2013) i am going to make baleage out of it so i can come back and plant beans or oats on it.(if i get it out the last of may , I may even try some early corn in those acres) Last year i baled it the l first of june. This is under a pivot irrigator and my beans averaged 42 bpa and my beans i planted the middle of june after i baled the rye made 29 bpa. They were a group 1.7, i wanted them out early so i could come back and plant rye/triticale on it. see pics under crop forum. Going to also plant oats/ field peas and make baleage and then plant early beans/oats. Alot of the decisions will be made if we get any winter/early spring moisture or not.

I am located by sioux city iowa
