Martinsville, Ohio | Calcium may be holy grail but I have taken enough soil tests and tracked enough yields to know that the best producing soils are high in calcium.
I also balance pH but Ca is only part of that. Mg raises pH 2 times faster than calcium so if you are low in Magnesium and low in pH, dolomitic lime will change your pH faster.
Many midwest soils like mine have too much Magnesium from the way they were formed so if I have a choice, I use a high calcium source.
Air and water movement follows calcium as well as soil tilth. The best producing soils I have handled are high in calcium and low in magnesium so I try to use more calcium in my soil. It is a very important secondary element in the 17 known needed nutrients, and one that is most lacking in my soil.
Calcium is still inexpensive at $8-15 per ton compared to the primary nutrients so my money is better spent there so my high dollar fertilizer works like it should.
