If you can precision plant you need sugar beet or small milo plates set to plant 4" in-row spacing. 15" rows is ideal and would give you a 4 lb per acre seeding rate. I'd suggest 8lbs drilled this late. A companion crop is great but i'd need to know what you are trying to accomplish, etc to make suggestions. Triticale, cereal rye, vetch are possibilities.
