Capac, Michigan
I think he's BSing you on the over graining part. I to have a 50 cow herd and I feed all HMC and my High cows are getting 18# of HMC at 24% Moisture. Given my cows are fed with a TMR but when I fed with a scoop I usually got about 6# per scoop so you would have to give your cows like 3 times as many scoops over normal. If you would screw up that much on daily basis you shouldn't be feeding the cows someone else should. Details are the money makers. If you were feeding only corn with a scoop and not corn with protien together you could play with it a little bit to get a little more milk out of your higher producers as long as you didn't go crazy. Add a little bit at a time wait and watch for aboutv 3 days and see what you get. But more milk means lower components once you get them pumping. You could do the same with dry corn just get your corn seperatley from your protien. I always play with my rations after the nutritionist is done but I do all the feeding and I watch manure consistancy, production, BF%, MUN, and cud chewing. I feed haylage, corn silage, straw, HMC, protien mix, and sometimes energy booster 100. I run 80# + on 2x, it can be done even on pasture it's all about fine tuning the details and how much you want to spend. It sounds complicated but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple.
