South Africa | Sounds like a decent neighbour, thanks for posting the story. We've come into the habit of offering help only when we genuinely expect nothing in return. Seems to work better, since there are no expectations of getting something back. Last year after finishing harvest, we helped out a neighbour to finish his (one of his two combines had broken down a week before). This year we had some sprayer issues when trying to get pre-seeding burndown done. One afternoon I got to the yard and there was a tractor and sprayer spraying the next two fields to be seeded - the guy had heard of our issues and sent his sprayer operator to pick up the chemical at our store and get it sprayed before going back to his. For a retired neighbour, I'd reckon just the chance to get out and about and be part of a farming operation again, even just for a day or two, is plenty reward in itself. It would be that way for me, anyway. We have a retired neighbour who has said the same thing too. Might be something to keep in mind? Making a person feel welcome to visit your operation is a kind of "payment" in itself. | |
