Subject: RE: Where do you live, and why?

Got my college degrees then took a job 90 miles from home. Met and married a local girl and bought a small farm and both had good jobs. It was a nice area near her family and we'd have probably stayed there forever until my sister died in a car accident. That got us thinking about going home to be near my parents and to help my brother in law with my sisters two year old twins. Parents retired, built their retirement rancher on the other end of the farm, and we moved into the farm house. Things have worked out well, better than I ever expected, and better than they ever would have had I stayed on the farm after HS or college. Dad still works as hard as ever when I need help but is happy to leave the management and paperwork to me. My wife and I have new jobs we like and we attend a church with lots of programs for our children. I've enjoyed relatively good times on the farm and have been able to add irrigation, a larger shop, and a manure storage building. The home farm was purchased by my grandfather at a federal land bank auction in the 30's as just one of the holdings of a large landowner who lost his fortune as a result of the great depression and a devastating barn fire which killed his horses and cows. I also till the waterfront farm where my grandfather was raised and retired that my father and his siblings now own. I should add that the farm we bought and still own was in the same family for 7-8 generations before ending up with a bachelor who left it to his niece and nephew who were not in the area. The bachelor did donate the development rights away before he died which is why we and two neighboring farmers were able to buy it instead of it becoming just another large housing development.
