I've never used 3" spikes. We pulled 2" spikes on a 41' JD 7-8" with a strong running 9400. It will also depend on how many pounds of trip force your shanks are rated for. The more pounds the harder they pull through the ground because they can flex less when hitting real hard spots. A lot of our ground is the opposite of mellow here.
