Here is what I received from a friend of mine who has studied the Battle of Gettysburg extensively: the picture linked below is somewhat graphic, be warned if you have a problem with that.
I’ve heard that story at a number of battlefields. If I remember correctly there is an account by a wounded, helpless soldier in the Wheatfield that said he fended off a wild hog or pig the night of July 2-3. See link below for picture of dead soldier in the Wheatfield. Supposedly he was eaten by hogs. http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=A0PDoVw992pQEBgACQ.JzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBlMTQ4cGxyBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDaW1n?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dgardner%2Bgettysburg%26_adv_prop%3Dimage%26va%3Dgardner%2Bgettysburg%26fr%3Dyfp-t-701%26tab%3Dorganic%26ri%3D73&w=991&h=676&imgurl=cdn.theatlantic.com%2Fstatic%2Finfocus%2Fcivilwar020912%2Fs_c14_00000001.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theatlantic.com%2Finfocus%2F2012%2F02%2Fthe-civil-war-part-2-the-people%2F100242%2F&size=214.3+KB&name=Last+year+marked+the+150th+anniversary+of+the+start+of+the+American+Civil+War%2C+a+milestone+commemorated&p=gardner+gettysburg&oid=3a6fa8786fb06d35c083a7a75c78069c&fr2=&fr=yfp-t-701&tt=Last%2Byear%2Bmarked%2Bthe%2B150th%2Banniversary%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bstart%2Bof%2Bthe%2BAmerican%2BCivil%2BWar%252C%2Ba%2Bmilestone%2Bcommemorated&b=61&ni=200&no=73&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=12i5ckgnu&sigb
