| General rule of thumb is take the price of corn and double it. As in $4.00 corn X 2 = $.80 cost of gain per lb. Now if fats are $.90 X say 1250 lbs. = $1125. 600 lb. calves needed to be bought @ $605. ($1125 - feed costs of $520) to break even. Now the variables. Some cattle feed more efficiently. And some can make as much as 10 cents or more in carcass premiums. No 2 pens are the same. That's why buyers are becoming increasingly selective and discount cattle that they don't know. Quality pays, especially in down years. | |
