X 2 on it being a maple bat. Most of the bats today are maple instead of the old stand by ash. Maple is why you see so many bats shatter today. Also, as previously said, bat was most likely cracked in a previous at bat. As for shaving the bat handle, I always preverred the skinny handle over a thicker one but I never shaved one.
