Considering planting some tillage radish seeds along with my winter wheat next week. Question is, what benefits do the radishes offer into wheat, especially this close to a freeze? Seems as if they aren't going to root down deep enough to break up any layers (which is what I'd really like them to do). So, if that doesnt occur, what are the benefits to the tillage radishes into wheat?

Not sure where you're located but I mixed 3 lbs/ac in with my srww last sept 21 (I'm in southern ON). Tubers only got ~the diameter of a pencil (as Steve said) and ~2" long at the most. Need to plant them earlier here.
