Martinsville, Ohio | I have talked about Mentors here before. All of us need good Mentors, especially young people starting out. I had good mentors but none of them were entrepreneurially experienced enough to help me grow in the 70's. I didn't get bad advice, I just didn't get the best.
Networking is huge, it is who you know and what they can tell you. You have to be able to sort out good advice.
There is no good network to connect farmers who would be willing to work with a young person who can grow into their business. It's pretty much a pot shot. Yes, there are some programs and some successes but they are few and I have never seen one here.
I have seen more times when the person thought they were working into the business and they were not included at the death or retirement of the other person.
There are many good programs for financial aid for young farmers but they have to be able to understand them and handle them.
The big thing is acquiring land and business and we all struggle with that, or at least most I know do. There is no easy way to find it and get it.
