Split application of nitrogen with 1/3 in the spring at or just ahead of planting and 2/3 side dressed as soon after and within 30 days of emergence as possible has been described by researchers as "the most efficient method" (bu corn/unit of N) of the 12 different methods that were studied.

Jim, I'd be really interested in finding the fertilizer trail/study you're talking about Could you transfer it ?

Damien,

I first saw this data at a presentation by Dr Dave Franzen at NDSU.  He has done a lot of work on nitrogen use. Here is a link to his web page and I see some other reports on the RH side of the page.

Dr Franzen and his colleagues at NDSU have done some very good work. They have also shown that a corn plant can be fed from one side as well as two as in skip row side dressing.

Several other well known US cornbelt consulting agronomists use the same approach to 1/3-2/3 split application.
