Subject: Re: your experience sidedressing N on corn

McLeod County, MN
I sidedressed some this year, and I am planning on doing everything next year. The fields where I put my full N rate on preplant are not near as good as the ones I sidedressed. I put on 50lbs of urea and 50lbs of AMS with agrotain. So I had a final Analysis of 33.5-0-0-12s. I used NH3 preplant this year. Next year it will be all urea so I can put down chemical. The coop custom spread it with some highboy deal and a spinner box. Next year I am going to shot for a 70/30 split between pre and sidedress. I am not real worried about being able to get in there at this point.

The other thing with a sidedress is you may get hailed out or something so whatever you were going to put on later can become a pretty significant savings. I think any that has been around long enough will tell you that if you can spoon feed the N you are much better off. I think by slowly giving it to the plant you can trim the amount used a little, and you are less susceptible to loss from weather. From everything I have heard and read 7th leaf corn (give or take a couple days) really seems to be the ideal application time. I would highly recommend the AMS too.
