California Milk Board Goes After PETA

The California Milk Processors Board, which owns the well-known “Got milk?” slogan, is demanding People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals stop its “Got pus? Milk does” publicity campaign. PETA is using the slogan on T-shirts, mugs and other materials to call attention to what it alleges are dangerous levels of somatic cells--pus--in milk sold on the retail market.
PETA’s use of the slogan is trademark infringement, according to the processors board. It’s also grossly inaccurate, according to Steve James, the board’s executive director, who told the Associated Press “milk is one of the most regulated, tested and therefore safest products that consumers can buy.” He also noted U.S. law for nearly a century has required pasteurization of milk to remove harmful organisms and bacteria.
