NEMO | I have looked up several definitions and one definition of a cult is, "A Christian cult is a group that denies one or more of the fundamental truths of Christianity, while still claiming to be Christian."
Amish don't believe that they can know for sure that they are going to heaven. They believe you have to be a member of 'their' church to go to heaven. They believe you have to be 'baptized' into their church to go to heaven (according to the Bible, the actual 'act' of baptism doesn't save you). They believe in doing 'good works' to get to heaven. All of these go against what is found in the Bible.
I have several friends that are Amish. Most all of them are 'good' people. I don't call it a cult lightly, as it weighs heavy on my heart.
The two thieves that hung on the cross the same day Jesus was crucified, one cursed him, the other asked Jesus to remember him, Jesus replied, "Today you will be with me in my Father's kingdom" (paraphrased). I don't think that thief had a chance to be baptized, so I asked the Amish neighbor what he thought. I think he is still pondering that one!
When the 'rules' vary so much from community to community, and when 1 person sets the rules for that community, along with the fact that many rules are not 'Bible' based, I'm afraid it's a cult.
