Subject: Scat Happens!

Little River, TX
A friend and fellow Certified Flight Instructor with a student landed on top of another plane also going in for a landing. Yes it was exciting for all involved!

It was at a "Uncontrolled Airport" meaning an airport where each is responsible for their own and others safety.

My buddy in a low wing Piper making a high angle approach, meaning slow approach speeds.

Other plane was a high wing Cessna, making a low angle straight in approach.

The Piper's wing obstructed the view below, while the Cessna's High wing obstructed the view above.

The result was the Piper made a touch and go on the Cessna who made a full stop landing.

At a Controlled Airport there can be dangers also. There is a tenancy to have faith in the controlling agency.
One of the Private Pilots who I trained used to fly his private plane to work on the west side of Dallas.
We lived on the West side of Fort Worth.

One thing that I harped on and emphasized was never ever fly at 3,000 ft on the altimeter when flying under Visual Flight Rules.
There are just too many instrument approaches and departures that put a Controlled plane at a hard 3,000 ft altitude. They are flying instruments and usually are not looking past the Wind Screen!
Ok? My now Private Pilot graduate student flying home from work, gave an advisory call to Carswell AFB Tower crossing over Carswell. The tower cleared him to cross at 3,000 feet! You guessed it he descended to 3,000 feet and was on the traffic pattern altitude for the B-52's & KC-135's, and one was in the pattern. A B-52 crossed over the little plane clearing it by 50 ft. The B-52 had three pilots with two supposed to be looking out at all times.
A week later I had coffee with the B-52 Instructor Pilot and the Private Pilot and both pilots gained some insight and understanding.

A few months ago three Ultra Lites went putt putting first through the Fort Worth City Air Port and then The Carswell AFB (now NAS) traffic pattens.

Scat Happens!
