| had one family move here about 5 years ago.... from Wisconcin. They were sure a 'interest' to the local Bohunks.... for awhile! They claimed what they were having to pay on RE tax in Wisc. was more than what they could buy ground for around here! (there is a good very good reason for that) When the rains don't come here (more often than not), 40 acres, even 80 acres and you starve. This is the first year we've had a rough summer since they and a lot of their 'cousins' have moved here.
well, after listening to the local coffee shop gossip, they might be living here pretty much tax free: "Church affliliation exmeption" Our broke county sure had to put up a bunch of road signs to warn US NORMAL (LOL) folks to 'beware of horse and buggy on road'. I see various 'levels' of 'off the grid' type living...... some have generators, stationary small engines to run burr mills, sewing machines, water pumps.. even solar cells to run indoor lighting. I heard one family even has a pneumatic-compressed-air deep water well. Most have a butt load of nags that can barely stumble into town to sell the weekly 'goods'.... which in turn leave several piles of horsehit behind the grocery store. NICE EH? It's just a matter of time before a loaded corn semi plows one going through the hills...
FIL went over with a gunny sack full of walnuts a few years back to 'welcome them to the 'hood' and he couldn't get out of there without being pressured into BUYING a pie... and sure enough, next saturday at the farmers market, there was his now-hulled walnuts 'for sale' in cookies, brownies... I have a lot more respect for the Hutterites (SP?) up north in Dakota.. | |
