Leaving 10% unprotected is kinda the whole point to a refuge is it not? You need it to lower selection pressure on the insects in question right? If you use something else to protect your 10% then haven't you defeated the purpose of having a refuge. It would be the same selection pressure as 100% Genetically modified crop right? There is a cost to controlling insects, either for insecticides, or programs using traits which have a costs like the tech fee, yield drag, lost yield on the refuge. The reason for the refuge on 10 or 20% is the protect the trait from resistant pest on the other 80% or 90% right?
