Subject: WHY not try them out first....before you get repeater.??

just a tish NE of central ND
What is you area of usage like?
Flat? Hilly? Deep ravines? Radio use "line of sight" plus a mild bend . It doesn't like deep draws or tall hills. That doesn't mean it wont work, but the farther the ravine or hill you are behind is away form the transmitter, the more marginal it gets .We use no repeater here and get along fine .Radios make CB's function seem like kids toys Cell phones fill our need when we get farther away. Ours are quite good at 10 miles and in some areas we can reach 20-30(flat areas)Why not try some without repeaters. have the radio place set up some to try without the repeater so you can try them out .If they are not willing to do that,,,,,,, find a different radio sales place. You are going to buy the radio anyway weather you use repeater or not.....So take 2 radios home and try them......That si what we did about 20 years ago.Still using them, but you do have to get liscensed. We waited untill we figured out is we could get along without a repeater or not. i guess what we did was to get some radios form the supplyer that were on someone elses frequency and got permission to use that frequency form the owner(radio sales place)
