haskell county, ks
uhf with a repeater is the best, higher clarity radio system. if you have an antennae up high you can get very reliable distance, but is very much line of sight dependent. if you don't want to pay the repeater fees and don't want to set your own system up, you probably need to look at the vhf band in the 148 to 174mhz range. the disadvantage to the lower band is a lot more traffic to clutter up the radio, but the lower the band the more the radio waves curve with the earth so you will get longer range. i live in western ks in the flattest county in the state so uhf works very well for us and i couldn't give any estimate on distance in your area. you really need to find a good dealer and discuss your needs. any way you do it, you should be prepared too spend some money. you can buy cheap radios or high end or anything in between, but quality is very dependent on price. i have had good success on buying top end public service tk890 kenwood on ebay for a reasonable price and then having local dealer program. you will also need help with liscence, and a good dealer can help with that. seems like whatever you do will cost more than you want to spend, but i find that with everthing.
