Have been using 8' + railroad ties and 3/4 " sucker rod on 8' centers. Both have started to get spendy.
Started out using 1/4 " wire panels for smaller pens but went to using 1 5/8 x 16' 6 bar gates. Then I can open everything up to push snow and manure. Replaced one tie since 1983 and fences still look good.
