As someone who lives in a town 50 miles from the nearest fast food, and who is also married to the lunch lady, you'd be surprised at the politics that go into the school lunch program.

Regarding nutritionally balanced food tasting bland: hogwash.





Greg this could be one of the "here" things. Kids nowadays are babied way to much about what they want to eat. When i was a kid we ate what was put in front of us. You can bet that the meat, potatoes and veggies were a nutritionally balanced meal along with milk, no soda here but were aloud some koolaid in the summer.

School lunches are balanced and can you explain the politics that go into it. You talking about the lunch ladies themselves or from the school board or the state or federal. I thought in public schools it was all federal. Educate me please.

They're not babied here. They are expected to try everything on their plate. There is one main course, one fruit, and one vegetable. Only milk or water is served. No seconds until the plate is cleaned (or judged to be by the supervisor). The portions are small, and the feds are intent on making meat less prevalent in the meals. As I mentioned earlier, potatoes had recently come under fire:

Regarding fast food, I found this quite interesting:

School lunches are balanced: very little of anything. That's why kids are going to fast food outlets later in the day. And again, nutrition does not have to taste bad.
