If the gearbox stays engaged, I would not guess it would be that. On a 56 or 256, are both bolts in the small drive shaft between the wheels? Or the dogs could need some attention inside the wheel drives, should hear clicking when you back up engaged. Or the wheels could be sliding if it is a heavy windrow and they loose traction.
