What they were saying is that extremely dry and hot soil can kill off populations. Living in moist and normal soil temps for five years is totally different scenario. We see something similar in corn called fallow ground syndrome where nothing grows for a full season and the mycorrhizae die off. It takes a few weeks for their population to build back up.
