Southwest Missouri | Tuesday, we had a cow that did not "clean" after calving. I was going to put her in the chute to give her a Lutalaze (sp) shot. Most of our cows are gentle. She was not. She came after me. I sprained an ankle dodging and fell down. I whacked her on the nose, while I was down, and convinced her to not run over me. Instead, she kicked me in the ribs as she went by. I got up and finished the job (getting her in and giving her a shot), went home and licked my wounds.
Last night, I went to check on her. She had not cleaned yet, but there was more hanging out of her. Her little calf had crawled under the fence to get into the next pasture. It was close to a gate, so I drove the one ton flatbed close to the gate. When I got out, the cow came up blowing smoke. I did not have time to open the gate. So, I went around the truck to let her "cool off". She did not. She chased me three times around the truck, as fast as she could. Finally, I hopped onto the bed where she could not get me. I later got the gate open and they are together.
This cow will obviously find a new owner. If I sell her and her new calf now, it will be for less than they will bring 4-5 months from now. But it might be money well lost.
