The potential for motor damage is worse on 480 than 208 or 240 volts and worse with longer distances between the drive and the motor. And when you turn down the speed, you also turn down the cooling fan!

So a fairly lightly loaded 208/230 volt motor that's not run at less than 70% of full speed (42 hz) and is less than 100 feet from the drive will probably do fine while a fully loaded 480 volt motor that's 200' from the drive and is operated at 20 hz all day long may not last long unless it is built for that duty.

One problem is there is no industry standard that says what an inverter duty motor should be. Each manufacturer has come up with their own.
