Im five miles south of this http://www.smbsc.com/ These figures are scratchy so maybe someone has better ones. I beleive they process 120,000 acres of suger beets. I beleive back in 2000, they had 500+ growers, so that would average around 240 acres of beets. I do know of guys with well over a 1000 acres. They do run 12-22" lifters. It takes ALLOT of trucks, and unfortunately if you live around the beet plant, State law provides ANYONE with a pulse a liscence to drive one come harvest time. I will give the plant credit, they do a very good job of advertising on local radio's for what they call "rural rush hour". Usually someone dies due to a beet truck every harvest. Guys who don't have a cdl, and are not used to working at 4 in the morning , IMO, should not be allowed to drive 80,000 pounds of anything down the road next to me. |
