From my perspective it's not so much the heat that's the killer but the lack of moisture that normally comes with it. I try to plant after june 15 so theoretically it will be heading after the worst of the heat has passed. Right now my biggest milo is knee high and looks ok considering the heat. IF this pattern breaks and we get some august rain i feel like i can make a crop. Of course there are no hard and fast rules and back in the 90s we raised some real good milo planted in may because we had a string of wet julys. All in all though i would rather plant late than early but of course sometimes the decision is governed by moisture availability.
