For what it's worth, I remember back in '88 when I was detasseling as a teenager that once you pulled the tassel a lot of the corn plants would be showing less drought stress the next time we went through... Less rolling, etc.. My guess was that pulling the tassel reduced the water demand for growth, but I've got no clue. I know it hadn't rained in between, and temps were about the same.
