Perhaps it depends on the soil and climate, but 'here':

Tile is always good. In 88, and last year, and again this year, the better fields are the low ground with tile in it. Low ground with no tile the roots are lazy, they just don't develop, don't go down.

My very worst field in 1988 I finally got tiles this spring - well it got to be June, but it's pattern tiled. I suspect it will handle dry years better, tho of course the point is to handle wet years better.

If you need tile, it is good every year, wet or dry. Our plants grow on moisture in the soil. They do not grow in soil that is saturated in water (the water table). If during their growing period their roots hit the water table, the plant will stunt, slow down, have poor root development. That plant is in poor shape to handle whatever comes next, esp a very very dry period.

Tile allows a good crop in wet years, it also helps make a better crop in ultra dry years as well. But that is 'here' where we are needing to plant as soon as we can into the snowmelt in our short season on clay grounds.
