We have always thought that tile helped more in a dry year than a wet one. Tile gets rid of the excess water and makes the crop put down good roots as the soils has the correct water profile to it instead of short roots in excess water forced to really work hard when it dries out and they have to drill in hard ground. All too often those roots can't get to the moisture that normal depth roots can access in a dry year. Of course I could be wrong, Dad only started tiling his ground over half a century ago! Needless to say that both my ground and his are all tiled, most pattern but some random depending on the field and if it is flat or rolling. Tile, it does not cost but it does pay.
