Happens here all the time. 60% of the field is 175 bpa, 20% is 85, 10% is 225 and 10% is 0 (rough guesses). The 225 areas never get larger but the 0 areas grow on a year like this. Those are usually sand/gravel pockets. First 8 rows on next to a tree line are especially hard in a year like this too. It doesn't take too many 0's to start bringing down farm averages. On the flip side, I have a 4 acre field on my home place that was sod busted last year. It's corn this year and looks crazy good for being sand. When I say sand I mean it doesn't ball up at all when wet! It has very high OM and I think that's helping out tremendously. It would be interesting to do a root pit and see how deep the corn roots are.
