Subject: Re: High houred JD combine question?

Michigan - Saginaw County
Depends on the maintenance it has had... I'm flying a 55 year old airplane that can dependably go across the country - and does...
Anything mechanical can be repaired, rebuilt, or replaced with new parts...
Obviously with 9K hours you begin to wonder when the engine/tranny will need a rebuild..
Interestingly, Cummins did a big study on engine wear rates and found that just the hours were not the final answer - it is the amount of diesel that has been burned, with diesel engines needing internal overhaul at roughly 40,000 gallons...
So, an engine that has high hours under load has likely burned more than 40K gallons...
But an engine in a harbor patrol boat that does a lot of idling along might have high hours but is not approaching the 40,000 gallons burned...
