I would assume they use it because in a normal year they don't get enough rainfall.


Some years we get sufficient rain and on the drier years, we have to water corn, cotton and soybeans to keep the yeilds up. Rice takes a good bit of water anyway, but timely rains will help rice fields during pumping. To give you an example on irrigation, I have a place corn has never harvested less than 155 bu/acre in 25 years. To me, it's insurance. I don't want a year of 220 bu/acre corn and the next be 25 bu/acre. Worst I had as 25 back in the 80's.
