The way I understand it , roots aren't "forced" down as much as allowed to go down deep. Roots need air (oxygen) to thrive,in saturated soil the available space is taken up by water, stunting or stopping root growth. I am in an area where every spring is wet, and EVERY year the crop is healthier over tile runs in lower ground regardless of summer weather.
