Subject: followup-Corn notilled in WI 042812 w new 6 row Kinze (pics)

Driftless SW Wisconsin

This past afternoon I revisited the field and spots shown in the original post referenced above and spoke with the customer.  As discussed at the time, here are a couple follow up pictures. I will repost two earlier pictures from the same area of the field and two pictures from today.

Frankly the corn looks amazingly good given the heat, winds and dryness in SW WI since planting. There were a couple fairly heavy rains on this stand the first week in May, right after planting.  Folks were sure there would be gullies, etc. I see none. This field is fairly typical for the the area heavy clay soil and has been custom no tilled for several years prior to this one in a 50/50 corn/bean rotation.

I walked the field before visiting with the producer and was amazed to find most of this corn chest to shoulder high on me EXCEPT for a couple rows - shown in the center of the first picture from today.  The farmer told me he found the left end (row #1) row popup tube was plugged for the first couple fields. When he turned this left two rows very noticeable shorter - about waist high on me - than the other 5 rows on this 6 row Kinze.

So this also illustrates an example of the benefit of 6 gal/a pop-up in furrow through Totally Tubular tubes.

This customer tends to plant a bit low population (30k/a) in my opinion. He is pleased with the stand and says it is better in some of his later planted fields after he got more used to the planter. 4/28 was the first day he put the new planter in the ground. It is a Dairyland RR hybrid.

Overall the plants looked very good except for the height difference due to no popup.  Remarkable actually for the weather.  And in my opinion this corn is about the tallest of any around the area, regardless of tillage system.  It is noticeably better than much of the conventionally tilled corn which appears much more stressed. Not a scientific study but my own visual impression and opinion.

These photos are in the same spot in the field +/- maybe 50 ft.  Here are pictures from today and 4/28 for reference. The LH planter row in pic 495 is the RH corn row in pic 732. The 2 RH rows in 732 straddle the guess row (after turning) and had no popup.  I admit the corn doesn't look as tall in the pics as it did standing in it. But it was that tall. Hard to take a picture of yourself standing in corn!
