Ron, I think you answered your own question when you said that you appreciated the call when it happened to you.
  I guess without knowing the other  guy involved  its hard to say  what his reaction might be,  but  I think what it boils  down to is  that how you behave is your business,  and how he behaves is his.

 In other words its probably more important to you to try to do the right thing in any situation than it is  for you to worry about your neighbours  (potential ) behaviour. 
  Often easier to say than  to do, admittedly.
