Manson IA | Forget about if it is Win 7, XP, or what workgroup it is in as it seems it doesn't matter yet.. First you need to figure out the IP status. I say this because you mentioned running ipconfig and it is showing a default IP address. This may be fine but I don't know your config....
If the other computers are using a different IP addressing scheme than the 192.168.1.xxx then just pick an IP that isn't used, assign it to the network card and see if you can ping back n forth between the two computers you are trying to talk between. Make sure firewall is turned off to do this because pings are blocked by windows firewall by default if it is enabled.
If you can't get a ping to work, nothing else will....
